Running old DOS programs under Windows XP?

I've installed Windows XP Pro upgrade over Windows 98, now I find a lot of my DOS programs (mainly emulators) won't work. Compatibilty mode doesn't either. I know XP isn't built on DOS like older Windows, is there a program I can use to run these DOS programs under XP?

A lot of older programs written to run under DOS will NOT run under Windows XP, even in compatibility mode. Your best bet is to upgrade these programs (your emulators) to a newer version that will. I think there are emulators made to run in Windows for just about everything. Failing that, you can still run older DOS programs in a DOS emulator like DOSBox as other people have mentioned. I have used DOSBox for some of my older games (circa 1990) and have not had any problems running them. It's amazing! And it's even more amazing that something like this is free! Hugs all 'round to these volunteer programmers. Open source rocks!

Hi,

This is very simple !!

Step 1: click start button

step 2: select Run

step 3: type "cmd"

Now you can access command Prompt

Enjoy your service NOW!!
Straight after Windows 95 was introduced, Windows changed from being 16 bit to 32 bit and this caused havoc with both software amd hardware - things like scanners no longer worked because they were 16 bit.

If you're only having trouble with programs, I'd so a search in Limewire.com for an updated version that will work on your PC or I'd visit the manufacturers website to see if a patch is available.
no u cant? because the version of dos changes in windows xp. The solution is if u have partation on u r HDD the install windows 98 on other partation and boot u r comp from win 98 and start u r dos prog.
I've done that, but I didn't encounter any problems from my pcs...

playing games using emulators also...

try to select your *.exe dos program and right click then properties and check compatibility mode and set it into windows 95 then apply...

everytime, you run that program, then it will use windows 95 system with that program....

check it again...
As far as I know, you don't need any softwares. Just go to start menu%26gt;run%26gt;cmd

Then choose the drive that contains your program. (like D: ) %26amp; then press Enter.

If the program is in a folder, type this command line to get there: " cd foldername " %26amp; then type "dir" to see the file names in DOS mode %26amp; find your file %26amp; type it %26amp; press enter.
