I have a motorola usb cable modem plugged into my computer via usb...I also have a gigabit ethernet in my system going into a 5 port switch..how do I make my windows xp pro into a router for other machines on the switch? Is there any 3rd party software? Thanks

Unfortunately no. You cannot set up DHCP. You have to manually type in the IP's. Sorry. I assume you know how to do that already though.

No, a router is hardware, not software, but a software router might be a good way to compete with Bill Gates.
You need a server operating system in order to have DHCP.
You need to setup ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). You can go to Control Panel %26gt; Network Connections. And click on Setup a home network. This is a Wizard to guide you through. It will allows options such as "other computers connect to the internet through this computer" etc. And you can choose what ports to use.
Another way is to right mouse click your internet connection. Select Properties and choose the Advanced tab and check "allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection"
