Installed new windows xp but internet doesnt work, downgraded from vista, and i have a passwordless

I dowgraded from windows vista home premium to windows xp pro, and everything seems fine except i cant get online. It should be as easy as 1, 2, 3 since i have broadband. Didnt have this problem ever when i might reboot home premium or anything, my broadband was simply recognized without me having to download any drivers. When i went through the settings, and i picked it was a broadband that didnt reqiuire a pass, it said it should already be connected to the internet. I would really like to know how to fix this since vista is a pain. If it helps, my desktop model is a HP A6130N, and my cable modem is Toshiba PCX2600. My ISP is RCN. I tried everyway through settings in XP but i couldnt find anyway to fix this problem. Someone help me get on the internet on windows xp because vista is a pain. Oh, also, i dont have a cd, but i can just download drivers if needed and burn them.

If your downgrade was successful, check your hard ware settings in the device manager in system which is in the control panel.

Find your network card and see if there is an exclamation point or red x on it, if there isn't then your device should be working properly.

To determine for sure, go start run then type cmd hit enter. Then type ping 127.0.0.1, this is a loop feedback for the network card, if it is successful then your card is working.

Now you need to check your TCP/IP settings, right click on your network connection and go to properties, make sure tcp/ip is in the list, go to properties and make sure it is all set for DHCP, once done you should go back to the network connection, right click on it and select repair, if it renews successfully, then open your browser and your home page should appear.

Good luck.
