XP Pro Product Key?

Good day. I have a legit product ID Key for windows XP Pro. I got this key from my old original XP Pro cd but it is damaged hence i cant use it. I borrowed a copy of a XP cd a friend gave me and he told me since it is counterfeit, change the product key. I try to change the key to my legit one under the "activate windows" wizard but it is not changing? Keeps telling me key was typed incorrectly and it is not incorrect cause is a print out from the program which gave me the key on my computer. This is the program:

Codes are vaild with certain media.

Meaning that you cannot use an OEM key code with a Retail or Volume Edition CD. Also if your code if an upgrade code you cannot use any full edition CD it must be an upgrade edition.

If you have a major manufacturer system (DELL, COMPAQ, IBM) you will require OEM CD.

Some clone builders will sell you OEM as well. (Equus, Systemax.)

If you built your system it more than likely was a retail edition or upgrade.

Volume License require select membership with Microsoft.

Also since this is off your old system it the key was distributed to multiple pc and activated microsoft will put the code on the pirated list.

Multiple PC's CANNOT use the same key unless they're volume licensed.

You could try to call MS but since it was licensed to your old PC and if your license was OEM you cannot use the key on any other systems (OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer).

If it was retail and your replacing the system because a component failed (like motherboard) they will allow re-activation.

Try calling Microsoft. If that doesn't work, call the PC manufacturer (e.g. Dell, HP). If that doesn't work, install Kubuntu Linux ;-)
Use this link to contact Microsoft. If your CD is damaged beyond use and you have the key code, they will replace the CD after verifying it. The key cracker site you have will not give you a legitimate code for your CD.
