Downgraded from Vista to XP Pro 鈥?HELP!?

New - eMachine T5224

Came with Vista so I wiped the HD with dban鈥檚 (Boot and Nuke) .

Okay, so now I loaded Windows XP Pro 32Bit, setup goes good etc. but now it has designated the hard drive as H:

So!!! I start over, format the HD, install XP Pro again, low and behold it鈥檚 designated as H: again!!!!!

What the H*** is going on what am I missing???

Doesn't the unspoken computer law, say that: "Hard drives shalt be designated as C:" ~ Sayeth the God of computer geeks.

Try reinstalling, but this time make sure you delete (not format) every partition, then create a new partition using the entire harddrive. It should be given the letter C:

I am curious if you have partitioned it right. If you are going to repartition it, just make one large partition.
I hope you made your recovery discs first.
you shouldnt have downgraded it windows vista service pack one was coming out this year and it was going to remove all the bugs and make it more compatiable with more stuff
Just format the whole damn HD and combine all partitions then boot your OS cd and install it should go to C:

:)
This has happened to me in the case where the hard drive is on an external controller or a secondary controller on the motherboard.

If it makes you feel better, this will likely not cause any problems. It is strange though that in Vista, Microsoft "fixed" this problem by always naming the boot drive "C".
