windows XP is starting to reach its shelf life. back when it was initially released, MS decided to add in checks to prevent installing after a certain amount of time, or after a certain amount of reinstalls.

My suggestion is to begin thinking about using alternative operating systems, because microsoft is getting increasingly money-grubbing. i can forsee more problems like this coming along in the future.

As for your CD key, you may be able to call the help line, but the workers will usually assume that you've stolen their software. they will treat you like a pirate and most likely not help you. i suggest getting Unbuntu.

you can use it forever. call the help line.
I think only Once... or its like in one PC
Call Microsoft - they'll help.
Same exact thing happened to me. Call Microsoft help line. The phone number should pop up on your screen. They will help you but plan on being on the phone for at least an hour. Took forrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrever!!!!

Late
I think you can only re-install XP after 90 day; however, just following the directions below to contact Microsoft.

If you just explain why you're re-installing, they will provide you with a product key for the current install you are trying to perform.

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Activate Windows.

2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows, and then click Next.

3. Click Change Product Key, type the new product key, and then click Update.

4. Click Telephone, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the activation process.
Go to Brian Carr's website (just Google serach him) and he will have about a dozen academic volume keys and one is certain wo work
