How do I set up a VPN with Windows XP Pro from start to finish - and I have Zone Alarm?windows explorer
There are a few factors you have to consider, which all stem from what type of VPN connection you are going to use.
There are a number of methods to create a VPN connection. For example, you could be using Microsoft's VPN connection or you could be using another method like Cisco (which would connect to an appliance.)
Whichever way it is, the steps are pretty straight forward as far as setting up a VPN connection from a client side. If you are asking about setting up a full VPN solution including the network you are trying to connect to, that's a different story.
Windows XP Pro makes it pretty easy to create a Microsoft VPN connection. Bring up your Network Connections window and click on "Create a new connection" to start the wizard. The wizard will ask you which kind of connection you want (you'll want to dial into a workplace that labels VPN) and what the IP address or hostname of your target is (which should be provided by your network administrator.)
If your VPN connection is to an appliance, contact your network administrator for the client program needed to install on your machine.
Zone Alarm does through a slight curveball. If you have to install a third-party program to connect via VPN, you'll need to establish that program as a "Trusted program" within Zone Alarm. This should let your VPN connection through. You may need your network administrator for tweaks.
If you are using Microsoft's VPN solution, you might just want to turn off Zone Alarm while connecting.
Hope this helps!
