XP and 2000 are very similar, in terms of the code underneath. XP provides additional compatibility with older software, and it is also marginally faster.

XP is a fine system, but if resources are an issue, then you want 2000. In many respects they are VERY similar and most software that will run on one will run on the other without a problem.
When it comes to reinstall, 2000 is better, there is no need to go thru micosoft
Windows XP by far is more optimised for performance on the same hardware even with the additional fat of system apps, etc.

The most up to date Win2k is more stable, and runs "fastest", but you're looking at mostly enterprise level and server type programs. But Windows XP will have more support for everything, especially games, and will run those faster undoubtedly.
XP - also its still supported fully by Microsoft. I believe they stopped 2000 support some months ago....
