Go from Windows 2000 to XP Pro without formatting ??

I've been running windows 2000 for a good 4 or 5 years with no problems. I never upgraded to Xp because i was used to the layout of 2000 and didnt really need to.

Now I've received a pc game that will not run on 2000. It just crashes. So Xp here i come. My question is, Do i have to format my HD to install? I know you can install multiple versions of windows on a pc, but i am wanting to install Xp and then remove 2000. It wouldn't be such a big deal but I just formatted about 3 weeks ago and don't really feel like doing it again........

If anyone has any idea let me know.

Yup, the same procedure when you do NT4 to 2000.

Me sis also has 2000 because of work and she install xp for home use purpose.

tuen you computer on and log on as normal then insert xp disc and then instaed of new installation press upgrade os and then all your things will still be there and you will have xp
Skip Xp and go right to the new Windows Vista....I have it and its FANTASTIC.
Just get a windows XP upgrade disk. Either Home or Pro and do a upgrade verses a new install. It will leave all your files and settings intact from the previous OS.. You shoud be fine...thanks
Instead of upgrading to Win XP, I recommend installing a fresh version of XP.

If you are using Win 2000 i recommend not to upgrade it to XP too. Win 2000 is much more efficient than XP.

Mt recommendation will be partitioning the HD and arrange around 10 GB of HD space for Win XP than install XP do the updates (around 60MB if your installing XP SP2) and then upgrade to latest Dirext X and than install your game. You can play your game on XP and start moving your personal files if you want to go on with XP. Than format the Win 2000 partition whenever you are ready.
Ok well you can do this, but know this. Even though they say you can keep your programs, the upgrade overwrites registry, and leaves files intact. This means that programs are there, but the operating system cannot run them. I am a PC tech, and i get this all the time.

Honestly, when changing the OS you should format it. I know it sounds like a hassal, but use XP's built in NTFS (Quick) format, and it will take a whole 30 seconds to format.

So, i mean, it's not as bad as most people make it sound. Just make sure your computer matches the recommened requirenments.
You can try buying a copy of Windows XP from a software reseller or an electronics store. All you have to do is to install the disc and you're good to go, however, if the PC specs are lower than these:

HD capacity: 60GB

RAM size: 512MB

Processor: Pentium 4

...then I think it's time for a new PC. You don't necessarily need these specs for Windows XP, but it is recommended to have at least these, because standard specs for new PC's are usually this:

HD Capacity: 250GB

RAM Size: 1GB

Processor: Intel or AMD Dual Core Processor (Intel is Core 2 Duo; AMD is Turion X2, or maybe anything else X2)

The layout of XP isn't very much different from 2000, in my opinion. I've used both recently.
