I read something about terminal service or SMS. Can anyone tell me more about this? I believe using Remote Desktop won't work if the destination is Windows 2000 or older.

You can download a Remote Desktop Client for 2000 directly form microsoft. We use it all the time where i work with XP and 2000 PC's

Correct, but you could use PC Anywhere or VNC.
There are other tools like Landesk i think
I can only recommend logmein.com - works with most OS's 95, 98 , ME, 2000, XP, 2003....
VNC is good for internal networks only.
