how to format the drive?

I m using windows XP Pro. due to lack of space on the hard disk i want to format my c drive and install win 98replacement windows

Think twice before moving back to Win 98. I think there is no support for Win 98 nowadays. Also, most of the software that are coming out are for XP.

To format your C drive, check this link out.

HTH

I m using windows XP Pro. due to lack of space on the hard disk i want to format my c drive and install win 98windows mail internet explorer

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221829
to format the system..

1. Insert the Win98 Bootable CD

2. choose CD ROM support from the menu (3 options).

3. type the command fdisk and hit enter

4. follow the instructions to format.

5. now go to CD Drive from the command prompt (go to win 96 folder)

6. type setup and hit enter.

DONE...
If you reveret back to Win98 you will not be able to download and install all the security patches from Microsoft. They stopped supporting Win98 in 2004/2005...Next to be stopped is Windows Me/ then Win2k.......They are trying to push everyone to use Windows XP home/professional or Vista......Thanks
re-partitioning and formatting using dos commands can be difficult if you have not tried it before. So if you have win XP cd, boot from it, then when you come to a screen where you are asked to choose the partition on which to install xp, you will see a list of available partitions in the lower panel on the same window. You can press appropriate keys, as mentioned on the screen to first

1) delete all partitions

2) create new partition/s of the desired size

Then exit after partitioning, by turning power off, then take out the cd while rebooting.

After that insert the win98 cd and start the installtion. It will choose the partition to install windows and then start formatting automatically.

However if you do not want to repartition and only format then boot in dos mode using the win98 cd and use the command

format c:\ press Enter

to format another partition, format d:\ etc, to format your existing partitions.

My window xp pro hangs when I run the recovery console?

I get to the point where it asks which windows installation I would like to log into but when I type 1 (1: C\WINDOWS) It does not proceed beyond that point. What can I do? I don't want to reinstall xp Pro because I'll loose all my data that way.

My window xp pro hangs when I run the recovery console?microsoft support

I've never had a problem with XP pro. Put the cd in the cd player and reboot. To make sure that it's booting from the proper mount point, press delete, or whatever key brings up your bios. Check your bios settings for boot sequece to make sure that the CD is the first boot option, then the hardrive is the second, then the floppy, or USB is the third option. Then press F10 and continue with the boot process. When it asks for fail safe mode, hit that. If you get into the operating system, then power back out and reboot and choose windows.

Sound to me like your whole life is wrapped up into windows (Microsoft). Try installing Debian (open source Linux) along with your window and use the YaST configure utility to lengthen the time it takes to choose between operating systems from 7 seconds to 999 seconds, then have fun with both. If your Windows gives you a problem again, you'll have Linux to save your system with.

Media Center is based on XP Pro, but many of the more advanced features are missing. Call it a stronger Home Edition with more crap you don't need (for a laptop, at least). The biggest adavantage for home users is that Media Center supports 2 processors/dual core, which Home Edition does not. Pro by itself supports 2 processors. Laptops as of now, don't.

You can boot using an XP CD and read files that you created on the hard drive, but you cannot run any programs that were installed.

For example, you can copy off documents, but cannot open them in word.

I want to replace my windows with XP Pro edition. When i do that, will i loose anything kept in Yaho

No. First of all, Yahoo's information is stored remotely on Yahoo's servers. Secondly, if it were on your computer, you still wouldn't lose anything if you did a basic upgrade. Using a regular WinXP disk or a Upgrade disk, you can upgrade from previous versions of Windows without losing data. Just pop in the disk and follow the instructions.

No, Yahoo's information is stored on their server.

(I am assuming you speak of email messages @yahoo, and yahoo messenger contacts.)
No, yahoo isn't on your computer (unless you've downloaded/used a mail client other than using your browser to navigate yahoo! Then, if you've downloaded all your mail, you'd have to back that up to a CD or something and install XP pro.) Yahoo isn't sitting in your hard drive.
the bigger question is, replace it with what??? and why??? unless ur looking at Vista, why replace it? if ur just reinstalling, as long as you dont format the drive u shud be ok.
No, Yahoo is entirely web based. The only thing you will have to remember is your Username and Password. In fact you can us Yahoo from any internet connected computer in the world!
No. Yahoo is accessible on any computer anywhere you are..

What is the difference between Windows XP and Pro?internet explorer internet explorer

What is Pro? There is a Windows XP Home Edition and a Windows XP Professional edition. Are you trying to figure out the differences between the two or are you trying to compare Windows XP with another operating system?
Pro has more UI (user interface) custimization features and more in depth options for networking and such. Home and Pro are very similar and for anyone who doesn't know the difference you most likely do not need Pro anyway. Media edition is a 3rd version of XP that incorporates remote controls and such and improved movie watching etc. Probably best to download all 3 and try them out =p JUST KIDDING don't download programs.......
This is the best website for finding the difference between Windows XP Home and Professional editions. The difference lies in features such as security, file sharing, group policies, file management, user management, etc. Overall, the operating systems are pretty much similar in terms of looks. All the differences are under the hood. Needless to say, Pro is more secure and robust than the Home edition.
one is for novice and other is for professionals.

Microsoft Windows XP Help???microsoft word 2003

Most HP and Compaq notebook PCs manufactured between 2001 and 2005 are shipped with an Operating System Disc (OSD) that contains a full version of the Windows XP operating system. Depending on the notebook model, the disc may be a CD or a DVD. This disc is useful when your notebook PC has software problems that require the operating system to be repaired or reinstalled. Follow the steps in this document to repair or reinstall Windows XP if necessary.

Repair Windows using the Operating System CD-ROM

Windows XP can be repaired using the OSD included with your notebook PC. Follow the steps below to repair your operating system. These steps will not result in the loss of data.

Connect the AC adapter and turn on the notebook PC.

Insert the OSD into the CD or DVD drive.

Press and hold the Power button for five seconds to turn off the notebook.

Press the Power button again to start the notebook.

Press any key to boot from CD when prompted. The Welcome to Setup screen is displayed.

Press the Enter key to continue. A Licensing Agreement screen is displayed.

Press the F8 key to accept the agreement and continue. The Setup window is displayed.

Press R to repair the selected Windows installation. The repair process might take several minutes to complete. The notebook restarts into Windows after the process is complete.

Reinstall Windows using the Operating System Disc

Windows XP can be reinstalled using the OSD included with your notebook PC. Reinstalling the operating system may be necessary if repairing or otherwise restoring Windows does not fix the problem. Reinstalling Windows is not the same process as repairing Windows.

WARNING: Personal data and software you have installed on the notebook will be lost during the OSD reinstall. HP recommends that you make a backup copy of all personal data before beginning this process. For information on creating a backup copy of your data see Microsoft's Backup Basics (in English).

Follow the steps below to reinstall your operating system:

Connect the AC adapter and turn on the notebook PC.

Insert the OSD into the CD or DVD drive.

Press and hold the Power button for five seconds to turn off the notebook.

Press the Power button again to start the notebook.

Press any key to boot from CD when prompted. The Welcome to Setup screen is displayed.

Press the Enter key to continue. A Licensing Agreement screen is displayed.

Press the F8 key to accept the agreement and continue. The Setup window is displayed.

Press the Esc key to continue installing a fresh copy of the operating system without repairing.

Press Enter to setup the operating system.

Press C to continue using this partition.

Select Format the partition using the NTFS file system (Quick) and press Enter. A caution is displayed that formatting this drive will delete all current files.

To cancel this procedure press the Esc key on the keyboard.

To continue with reformatting your hard drive press the F key on your keyboard.

The reinstallation process begins and may take several minutes to complete. The notebook restarts into Windows after the process is complete.

NOTE: When prompted for the product key, refer to the Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity located on the bottom of the notebook

You must re-install all your drivers. They were deleted with everything else when you reformated.
You will need to go to Microsoft and download the sound drivers and you need to install the Internet provider program as well as any other programs which you had on the computer. Good luck.
connect your computer manually to the ethernet port. then redownload all the drivers for all your hardware through controll pannel add hardware
I just called my DSL Tech support today, Tuesday at Noon, and they helped me clearly set the connection settings up.

Setting up a new connection you need to select: "Never dial a connection." and make sure in the Advanced part that none of boxes are checked. Your DSL service provider should be able to make sure I remember all the correct steps.

You will need to reinstall your sound card drivers or update the drivers through the guided steps from inside the Device Manager.
Well your first problem sound: It seems you have to download the driver for the sound on your system. Most hp laptops have soundmax integrated audio in them so you can try downloading the driver from www.soundmax.com.

The second problem i.e networking: The copy of win dat you have is an old version hence it doesn't have wireless networking available on it. If you are using a genuine Ms Win xp copy then you can rectify this by downloadin the sp2 final. And if you are using a pirated copy then ask your vendor to provide you with a sp2 integrated win xp cd.

This should solve the problem.
Godd chance that neither the wireless or wired ethernet drivers got installed. You need to go to the HP website and find the drivers for the hardware you have. This will apply to sound as well.
If you're not getting sound, it's probably because you deleted the driver program that XP Pro needs in order to get the speakers working... and chances are, if you can't connect to the Internet, the problem is simmilar. If your modem doesn't have the programs it needs to connect to the Internet, then the modem won't work at all. I know you can download the programs you need from the Internet, then put them in the computer you need them in, so it will run properly, but unfortunately, I don't have knowledge as to where you can find those programs.

I run Windows XP, too, but I have the Home Edition... nothing all that special... but my computer is a Dell model. I don't know if there are any differences in programming between Dell and HP, so I can't help you any more than this; but see if you can find out if the hypothetical problems I listed above are correct... if not, then I don't know.
You must install the drivers if you have a fresh installation of windows xp.

once you install the drivers. you'll have sound and internet.
You need to find your drivers and download and install them. Find them here:

Simple answer no because Windows XP Home/Pro and Media Center are 2 completly different setups.

You will need the Windows Media Center setup cd to do a repair install.
I like Maurice F answer !!
chkdsk is perfectly fine but not reinstalling windows
No, using an xp home or pro cd will screw up windows even more than why you need to do a repair in the first place. the kernel files are different as well as the majority of the system files.

a repair install deletes all the necessary system files, and then replaces them with fresh, uncorrupted ones from the installation cd.

running checkdisk merely checks the file system on your hard disk. now dont get me wrong, i've used it and it works for file table or master boot record errors, but for a major amount of corrupted system files, even though it is worth a shot to run checkdisk, you have a 50% chance of it working.

It will work. It is not an upgrade. As was stated, that is a down-grade of sorts. The home edition is limited by comparison to the pro addition. If you don't need the pro, home edition is fine. If you already have the pro, then don't waste money on another edition.

That IS NOT an upgrade it is a downgrade
Moving from Windows XP Pro to Windows XP Home is not an upgrade; Pro allows you to do a number of things that you can't do with Home (e.g., automatic encryption of files or folders).

Windows MCE is XP Pro, plus the MCE features and minus some XP aspects, primarily networking. It is not an add-on, it's a complete OS.There's no legal way to get MCE onto your machine. You can buy it, around $115 at Newegg, and either replace your OS, or set-up as dual boot. It also is available in two versions of Vista.

thank you, friends

I just need to install window XP Pro from my imation 2GB flash drive;?

Its simply because the BIOS does not contain a software that could read your USB. BIOS only recognizes CD Rom Drive, Floppy drive, Keyboard, Monitor, etc, but not the USB port. The USB Driver comes from the Installation Disk of the Windows XP Pro CD, or in your case, is still in your Flash Disk. You will not be able to run your Windows XP installation thru your Flash disk unless you are installing or upgrading your XP from within windows itself. It would be wiser to use the Windows XP PRO CD for this installation.

Hope this helped.

How do I get the sound to work in Windows XP on a Macbook Pro?

I recently got a macbook pro, and installed boot camp and Windows XP to it. It starts up fine, and I installed all the mac drivers as it tells you to do. But there is no sound. The computer says there is no sound device under the device manager. I found the actual sound drivers in the program files, and clicked set-up. It goes through something and then says to restart the computer. When I did that it went back to the program and said the system would not recognize those drivers. I did some google searches and couldn't find anything about the sound not working (just that if you hook up headphones to it while in XP, the mac's speakers will still play audio). So, anyone have any clue how I can get the sound to work on the Windows XP side of my Macbook Pro?

What you need is the MCE video decoder. Google it. There are several sources, including Nvidia. The link below is for the encoder test. You seem to be confusing media center and media player in your post-XP can have media center and media player 11, not media center 11. If any of your recorded TV is copy protected, it can only be viewed on the PC it was recorded on.

Go from Windows 2000 to XP Pro without formatting ??

I've been running windows 2000 for a good 4 or 5 years with no problems. I never upgraded to Xp because i was used to the layout of 2000 and didnt really need to.

Now I've received a pc game that will not run on 2000. It just crashes. So Xp here i come. My question is, Do i have to format my HD to install? I know you can install multiple versions of windows on a pc, but i am wanting to install Xp and then remove 2000. It wouldn't be such a big deal but I just formatted about 3 weeks ago and don't really feel like doing it again........

If anyone has any idea let me know.

Go from Windows 2000 to XP Pro without formatting ??windows update internet explorer

tuen you computer on and log on as normal then insert xp disc and then instaed of new installation press upgrade os and then all your things will still be there and you will have xp
Skip Xp and go right to the new Windows Vista....I have it and its FANTASTIC.
Just get a windows XP upgrade disk. Either Home or Pro and do a upgrade verses a new install. It will leave all your files and settings intact from the previous OS.. You shoud be fine...thanks
Instead of upgrading to Win XP, I recommend installing a fresh version of XP.

If you are using Win 2000 i recommend not to upgrade it to XP too. Win 2000 is much more efficient than XP.

Mt recommendation will be partitioning the HD and arrange around 10 GB of HD space for Win XP than install XP do the updates (around 60MB if your installing XP SP2) and then upgrade to latest Dirext X and than install your game. You can play your game on XP and start moving your personal files if you want to go on with XP. Than format the Win 2000 partition whenever you are ready.
Ok well you can do this, but know this. Even though they say you can keep your programs, the upgrade overwrites registry, and leaves files intact. This means that programs are there, but the operating system cannot run them. I am a PC tech, and i get this all the time.

Honestly, when changing the OS you should format it. I know it sounds like a hassal, but use XP's built in NTFS (Quick) format, and it will take a whole 30 seconds to format.

So, i mean, it's not as bad as most people make it sound. Just make sure your computer matches the recommened requirenments.
You can try buying a copy of Windows XP from a software reseller or an electronics store. All you have to do is to install the disc and you're good to go, however, if the PC specs are lower than these:

HD capacity: 60GB

RAM size: 512MB

Processor: Pentium 4

...then I think it's time for a new PC. You don't necessarily need these specs for Windows XP, but it is recommended to have at least these, because standard specs for new PC's are usually this:

HD Capacity: 250GB

RAM Size: 1GB

Processor: Intel or AMD Dual Core Processor (Intel is Core 2 Duo; AMD is Turion X2, or maybe anything else X2)

The layout of XP isn't very much different from 2000, in my opinion. I've used both recently.

not an easy solution

- usb thumb drive

- copy the folder of the program ( c:\program files\)

- make note of the shortcut that you open to run the program

- copy that location down

- paste into new computer ( c:\program files)

- locate the original shortcut information that you copied down

- browse that folder on new computer and find the program as listed int he shortcut

- open it

- if you see dll errors, try copying the dll mentioned from old pc to new pc and put the dll in the same folder onthe new pc as was on the old one

You can run the Files and Settings transfer wizard from the cd, on the W2K machine.

Is the program already installed on the 2K machine or is the actuall install program that you want to move?

You might be able to swap files between them if they both have an infra red port on the side

Can I update Windows XP Home Ed with an XP Pro SP2 cd?

Can I update Windows XP Home Ed with an XP Pro SP2 cd?internet explorer update

Better let a technician do that for you. It's what they say business. They'd rather not tell you how to install the CD because they want the money for themselves. They are just giving you a hard time, so you'll come back. It always works, and many people fall for it.

Can I update Windows XP Home Ed with an XP Pro SP2 cd?web browser internet explorer

Yes, providing you have a fresh legitimate license key for the Pro CD.
yeah that should work, but you may have to wipe your drive first, make sure you backup all your data. With windows running, insert the SP2 disk. There should be an "Upgrade" option, but it is probably better to wipe and start again. If you bought the PC, they may refuse to work on it, as you have reinstalled windows..

they did that to me :( but i dont care, PC World suck :o

adam
Yes sp2 is an update
You should be able to update XP home to Pro as long as the CD you have is a full CD and not one of the OEM ones.

You may be better to back up all your data to DVD then reinstall using XP pro. Ths would also put everything back to a fresh state
YOU WILL FIND THAT IN ANY COPUTER SITES WITH DETAILS

yes. you can try and boot the machine and hit ctrl-f11. If Dell put the restore partiton on your machine you can reset it back to the way it was out of the box. If not, call dell and tell them you need the CDs. remember to back up your data. A full install will wipe out everything including your files.

Need help installing windows XP from 2000 Pro....????????

Need help installing windows XP from 2000 Pro....????????microsoft

This is telling you that you can't upgrade from Win2K to XP. If you're sure you've copied all the data off of that hard drive, and it's a full copy of XP on the CD, then I'd recommend you reformat the hard drive completely and reinstall XP that way.

If you've been sold an upgrade CD instead, time to go back to the retailer and demand your money back.

XP and 2000 are very similar, in terms of the code underneath. XP provides additional compatibility with older software, and it is also marginally faster.

Go with XP.

Which one is better Windows 2000 Pro or Windows Xp?opera browser internet explorer

windows xp
for a home user, XP
Least Resources: 2000

XP is a fine system, but if resources are an issue, then you want 2000. In many respects they are VERY similar and most software that will run on one will run on the other without a problem.
When it comes to reinstall, 2000 is better, there is no need to go thru micosoft
Windows XP by far is more optimised for performance on the same hardware even with the additional fat of system apps, etc.
XP
The most up to date Win2k is more stable, and runs "fastest", but you're looking at mostly enterprise level and server type programs. But Windows XP will have more support for everything, especially games, and will run those faster undoubtedly.
XP - also its still supported fully by Microsoft. I believe they stopped 2000 support some months ago....
Windows XP
Windows XP for other works...

And

Windows 2000 Pro for big networks... good for security...
win xp
xp you can do more it is faster and also on 2000 pro you cant do everything you can on a xp but dont get one vista is coming out soon
may be try ms dos 6.22

If your a home user, go with home. Or get Vista. Vista Basic is more advanced than XP pro.
i have used both xp the difference i think is that when i was using xp pro my windows curropted many times and xp home doesnt have such problems many people say that xp pro is better than xp home but trust me xp home is a better choice i m still using xp home !!
It depends on what you use your computer for

If all you want is to search the web and use common applications like Microsoft office products. All you need is Home.

If you are more of a tech, then you need XP pro.

One feature I use alot in Pro is Remote desktop. to connect to my computer from work.

Should I update Window XP Pro , to XP SP2?

So far i'm happy with what I have, there are no problems, my PC is working fine with the Xp pro, Ad- Adware and norton Symantec, which are keeping it very clean. I'm hesitant to update to window XP SP2. my friends are as confused as me. What do you think? Please note, I have no interest in firewalls because they seem to slow down the system. Thank you

Should I update Window XP Pro , to XP SP2?windows update

Yes, update to Service Pack 2.

I have had no problems or slow-downs with the built-in firewall in SP2 in Windows XP Pro. It is very easy to turn off the firewall if you wanted to. SP2 also monitors whether there is a problem with your anti-virus protection. I have at least a dozen PCs at work that have Windows XP Pro SP2 and performance is very important since they run critical applications 24/7.

I would not hesitate to update to SP2.

Should I update Window XP Pro , to XP SP2?microsoft excel internet explorer

eventually, you will have no choice to update.

software vendors will only develop new software for sp2

windows updates will stop working

it's not really a matter of wanting to update, but a matter of being forced, otherwise software will not be supported under the original version of windows.

microsoft's way to better support their products.
i would not download the sp2 my opinion it dose come with a firewall and stuff it slows everything up and causes allot of problems i made the mistake of doing that but its your computer
you should upgrade it. Because of all the security upgrades etc. sp2 is not offered just because they can, it is offered to enhance and protect your PC

Hope that helps

http://www.adminspy.com
I would update it if you have a legitimate version of Windows XP. There are a number of security patches included in that service pack and as stated above some programs will only run if SP2 is installed.

However, there are a certain number of steps you need to perform prior to downloading SP2. Below is the link from Microsoft that outlines what you need to do before installing SP2.

Note: the second link below has an option to order the SP2 disk rather than download it online if you prefer. Shipping and Handling charges may apply but it a small price to have the disk. If you are on Dial-up, it takes a long time to download it so the disk is preferable.
Yea, I would update to SP2 for sure... I just did this actually on my computer... I didn't want to for the longest time because my computer seemed to be running fine... but, I began to come across programs that I couldn't install because they needed SP2... I guess it really depends on what you want to use your computer for.... but, if you like the internet (your obviously on this) than you should upgrade for the simple reason of security updates...

One thing that I did that you might want to do is un-install the operating system and then re-install it.... before you do that make sure you back everything up that you want to keep because everything will be lost if you don't.... this way when you re-install the operating system, you will have basically a bran new computer....... then from there, before you do anything else, update it to SP2 immediatly.... this worked above and beyond well for me!!!!!!! walaaaaa ---- Bran spankin new computer with SP2..... best thing you could do for your computer and yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely you should update it to XP pro SP2 because its fixes all the bugs in the previous XP unless you are not connected to the internet. Windows Xp firewalls cant slow down your computer it has low on memory but not the best firewalls either, if you want firewalls try ZoneAlarm it might slow just a little bit...

Which is faster, Windows 2000 pro or XP pro?

Prior to Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional was Microsoft's most stable operating system. Many users would argue that it still is and that XP doesn't really bring enough to the table to go through the hassle of upgrading. So why should you switch?

Windows 2000 and Windows XP are, of course, essentially the same operating system. Internally at Microsoft, Windows 2000 is known as NT 5 while XP is known as NT 5.1. Both are based on the original Windows NT kernel, and both have sought to marry the NT and Windows 98 operating systems.

So which is better for you? Should you stick with what you know, or take a chance on a new upgrade? And if you do, how much of a challenge will it be? Below I present con and pro arguments pertaining to upgrading from 2000 to XP.

2000 was a good year

The Windows 2000 OS offers many advantages over previous releases of Windows, including Active Directory, self-healing applications, distributed management utilities, and an overall better performance. The platform is also very flexible and is available in professional workstation and server versions appropriate for a small or large businesses.

Windows 2000 also has an easier-to-use interface and avoids the use of Styles and other "improvements" found in Windows XP. The interface is straightforward and more like Windows NT 4 than either Windows 98 or XP. And because Windows 2000 has been out since 1999, many more bugs and security issues have been fixed (or at least addressed) via periodic Service Pack releases than with Windows XP.

Furthermore, vendors have had longer to make their products compatible with Windows 2000 than they have with Windows XP. Add that to the fact that Windows 2000 doesn't employ the controversial product activation that its newer cousin introduced and it's no wonder that many users across the country are opting to stick with the older OS.

If you're running anything less than a 400MHz system with 256MB of RAM you're probably better off with Windows 2000. The older OS requires less computing power, making things run much more smoothly on an older system.

Finally, if you have Windows 2000 Professional and install the service packs, Internet Explorer 6, Media Player 8, and DirectX 8, you'll have a system very similar to Windows XP without the assorted extra pieces of software that come with it. You'll also avoid the whole "product activation" ordeal, making life just a little bit easier.

Take the plunge

All the above said, if you have at least a 400MHz machine with 256MB of RAM, Windows XP will run faster on your system than will Windows 2000. (Independent benchmark tests indicate that Windows XP delivers 34 percent better performance when installed on a new PC than does Windows 2000. Average application access time is also 21 percent faster.) The new OS is also more configurable, giving you more control over your environment. Windows XP is also fully compatible with Windows NT 4, Windows Workstation, Windows Millennium, and Windows 98, and roughly 90 percent compatible with Windows 2000 applications, avoiding many of the compatibility issues that have plagued users of Windows.

One key difference in the overall look and feel of Windows XP is the redesigned interface. While it may take a while to get used to for die-hard 2000 users, the desktop is less cluttered and the task-orientated menu system will make accessing the programs and applications you most often need much easier. If you absolutely love the classic interface, don't fear; you can revert to it at any time.

Windows XP also offers more bells and whistles, such as built-in CD writer support, Remote Desktop Connection, Internet Connection Firewall, Fast User Switching (useful for when multiple users are sharing one PC), and Windows Movie Maker. And when you consider that the new OS boasts greater support for Windows 95/98 games and utilities, it's hard not to consider making the switch.

And because Windows XP is the latest and greatest OS, more manufacturers (not to mention Microsoft) will develop software for it than for Windows 2000. After all, Windows XP was built in part to replace its older cousin, so why should software houses support something that's obsolete? Manufacturers of existing hardware and software products are also more likely to add Windows XP compatibility now than Windows 2000 compatibility, as the industry focus has shifted to the newer OS.

With the release of Windows XP, Microsoft has also instituted a very thorough testing process that should ensure that third-party device drivers meet high performance criteria. Microsoft maintains a single update site containing copies of all certified driver and application program upgrades. Also, whenever new DLLs are installed, Windows XP will retain the older versions to allow for an easy restore in the event that something goes wrong. Updates can also be automatically downloaded and installed for network users. With Windows XP, users will no longer have to visit multiple vendor sites to download up-to-date drivers.

In essence, Windows XP users will get the benefit of building on existing Windows 2000 knowledge while being able to run many applications that ran under Windows 9x/Me, but failed to run properly under Windows 2000.

To switch or not to switch

If you've been using Windows 2000 Professional for a year or two and are happy with it (and don't need it do anything it isn't already capable of doing), then you probably don't need to upgrade to Windows XP Professional. Once you take away all the bells and whistles, there isn't much of a difference between the two operating systems. Save your money and buy some more RAM instead.

If, however, you'd like to add some of the compatibility that Windows 98 had and want to be on the cutting edge of Windows technology, an upgrade to XP is probably the way to go. If you have the available memory to support the new OS and need (or even just want) the new features that XP offers, then go for the upgrade. Installation is fairly easy and straightforward, especially if you've checked out your system ahead of time. Windows XP Professional does improve on its older cousin in a number of key areas, and there are worse ways that you could spend your money than to upgrade your OS.

Yes, you can do an upgrade install rather than a full install which will keep your files and applications and just upgrade the OS. Step by step guide here:

Can i install windows xp over windows 2000 pro without losing all my data?safari browser internet explorer

just keep all ur data file in a safe partition ...... but all ur programs will have to be installed again !!!!
yes. you can always upgrade windows. instead of re-installing it. granted, re-installing is always the best way i think, just to start clean and everything. the easiest way to save data is a portable USB hard drive. i have a WD160 gig that i backup my stuff on and its about the size of a deck of cards...if you cant do that you can fit the most on a DVDR...or you can just use CDRs...whatever floats your boat. but if you reinstall you will lose pretty much everything.
Your question is in two ways:

1) You want to upgrade your windows 2000 pro to windows xp pro; or

2) it sounds like you want to install windows xp in such a way that you can still have windows 2000 and can choose which operating system you want to boot to.

In both instances, YES. In 2) you do so by splitting partitions into two drives, e.g. a 120Gb hard drive can be partitioned into two 60Gb partitions and can install separate operating systems in each partition. This however depends on how the first windows 2000 was installed.

you can either insert your xp disk and startup, which should bring up a repair/format/install window and do it that way. Or hit F1 when you turn your computer on, go to boot sequence, and change it to where your computer boots first to DOS. Type cd.. and enter until it takes you to c:/

then type format c:/ (if your hard-drive is on C) and hit enter.. it will format it for you.. good luck

Start your computer with the winxp cd in the drive...Then follow the instructions...you can also go to microsoft online help...
yes, i did taht on my dads laptop. you go into bios i think and then you .... god, i forgot. i did it thgouh, and i installed a fake windows on it :P
This is so simple you're gonna love it....

Just put your Windows XP Pro disk in the CD drive and reboot your computer.

XP will start to boot and it should ask you if you want to do a "repair" installation or a "full" installation. Select the "full" installation. This will reformat your hard drive and you will not be able to access anything that is currently on your computer.

Just follow the on screen prompts for the full installation and you should be all set.

Hope this helps.
depending on the computer you have two options

1) many computers come with a hidden restore partition to restore your pc to the way it was the day you got it. if yours has this, when you turn it on you should see something like "Press F11 for Restore" or "Press F8 for Rescue Partition", etc.

press the key indicated and follow the prompts if this is your situation.

2) if you have the WinXP CD, pop in in the pc then reboot. your bios should start the cd up and you can follow all the prompts to reformat the hd and reinstall the operating system.

there is a 3rd possibility - some pc's came with "restore" cds. in that case use Restore CD#1 and follow step 2.
Don't format you hard drive - it is already formatted.

Don't reinstall Windows as it is already installed.

A virus should not cause this kind of problem.

Run check disk to try and repair your system.

Press Ctrl + Esc if you cannot see the Start button.
Pop the XP CD in and reboot the system. If your computer doesn't try to boot from the CD, you'll have to go into the BIOS to change the boot order and then reboot. (Different BIOS's have different ways to get into them before the OS fully boots, i.e. hitting F8).

Follow the instructions from there. If you want to set up multiple partitions, this is where you can do it. If not, make the entire hard drive one partition and make sure you format it in NTFS. Choosing the default options for whatever Windows tells you to do at this point is probably the easiest way to go.

Once the OS is fully installed, make sure you install any antivirus and firewall programs before you start gallivanting on the web. Only problem you may have is that Windows doesn't have the drivers to your ethernet card and therefore you won't be able to get out to the Internet. Hopefully you have driver disks or CDs. Otherwise, you may need help from someone with an internet connection.

Windows XP saying its not valid anymore?

Hi, I recently tried upgrading to Windows XP Pro from Windows XP. After Windows said the XP Pro is an older version of Windows and does not recommend downloading I canceled but now my Windows XP is sayings its not Valid anymore! I know its a legal copy because it came pre-installed onto my Dell 2 years ago when I bought it. Now I dunno where my original key code is. Its not letting me restore it to a previous day either :/. Do I have to buy a brand new Windows now? Thanks for any advice.

Windows XP saying its not valid anymore?microsoft zune

Call Dell or Microsoft.

Are you sure there's no sticker on your computer with the 25 character key code? All the Dell's I've seen have the Windows sticker somewhere.

If you're really in trouble, you can restore from the restore set Dell sent with your computer.

no you do not have to buy a new windows. I to have a dell and my windows went funny I spoke to a dell technition and he told me to save and backup all of my documents and so forth on the pc and then remove and reinstall windows this will put windows back into the factory settings
Your winxp code should be on a sticker on the side of your tower or if you are using a laptop then it should be on the bottom of it.

USB external drive causes Windows XP Home to freeze?

I have a 200GB Western Digital HD with a USB-to-IDE external enclosure. Everytime when I plug the USB cable into to my Toshiba L25-S119 notebook computer, the Windows XP Home hang/freeze. The following are some information about my computer hardware, OS, and HD:

Computer maker and model: Toshiba Satellite L25-S119

Hardware information (general):

CPU: Intel Celeron M 370 (1.5GHz) 1MB L2, 400MHz FSB

RAM: 768MB (256 + 512) PC4200 DDR2 533MHz SDRAM 1.8V SODIMM

Chipset: ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M Chipset

Southbridge: ATI SB400

Internal HD: 60GB FUJITSU MHV2060AH, 5400RPM, EIDE (ATA-6)

Optical drive: MATS.H.I.TA DVD/CDRW UJDA770

OS and BIOS information:

OS: Windows XP Home with SP2

BIOS: Toshiba v1.80 (12/14/05)

External USB HD: Western Digital 200GB HD (IDE)in NTFS with 2 partitions. (approximately 150 + 50 GB)

External Enclosure: Metal Gear Box with AC-to-DC power supply.

Other information:

The external USB HD works fine with my another two desktop PCs: Windows XP Pro SP2 and Windows 98 SE (with NTFS for Win98 and USB driver). And, it also works perfectly with my friends' Sony and HP notebook computers (Win xp Home).

My first thought was a driver problem. However, I checked the drivers it installed in this notebook were same as my other PCs.

I tried Windows XP Pro SP2 clean installation on this computer, but the problem still occured. Therefore, it is not some problems with the Home edition of Windows XP.

The external enclosure has a DC power supply, so power won't be the problem.

I have tried all my three USB ports. All the three USB ports works fine with my SanDisk 1GB Flash drive.

I did a CHKDSK using my desktop PC, and the disk was fine.

I also uninstalled and reinstalled all the USB and disk drivers, but it still the same.(set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1 devmgmt.msc)

The only situation that it works with this computer is when I boot the computer from Knoppix Linux CD. So, I guess this is not a hardware problem. How do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

USB external drive causes Windows XP Home to freeze?microsoft net

I discovered a configuration mismatch

CPU: Intel Celeron M 370 (1.5GHz) 1MB L2, 400MHz FSB

RAM: 768MB (256 + 512) PC4200 DDR2 533MHz

The clock frequency of the RAM may not be higher than the clock frequency of the FSB. Every manufacturer of a mainboard with FSB 400MHz would recommend RAM of the types PC2100 or PC2700.

This might not be the reason for your hangs/freezes, but the timing of PC4200 DDR RAMs on a 400MHz FSB is critical anyway.

Though I am not sure you might want to check the settings on the drive itself. You might need USB 2.0 to run the hard drive. Some older laptop/computers do not have this usb 2.0. If this is the case there are pc slot usb 2.0 connectors available for laptops. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Yes you can install XP on your laptop with your cd and key. You might want to download the XP drivers from the laptop manufacturers site first though. (legally you are not supposed to do this as per the Microsoft License agreement but you can get away with it.)

Yes you can just format and install on the C: partition and leave the D: partition intact.

no you can not due to the windows xp you have is for your old computer.and the new computer you have is vista and on there is all the divers just for vista.
Yes you can. If you reformat the drive you can install any O/S you want. As long as you have a valid CD Key so Microsoft doesn't disable it after a few months.
Useing 1 Hard Drive for 2 operating systems is not recommended because if a file writes over the other operating system then it can foul everything up.

You can get an external hard drive enclosure and put the old vista hard drive into it and buy another hard drive identical and put it in your laptop then load XP onto it.

Using vista hard drive as a USB OS System.
you would be able to but it may have alot of problems and you would have to get the drivers from each manufactor if ur computer manufactor does not have the drivers for windows xp on their website ...

Its not imPosable but its hard to do and it would take alot of your time

Why is Quickbooks Pro 2007 NOT recommended for Windows XP Home?

I unfortunately have Windows XP Home on all my computers and I want to purchase and use Quickbooks Pro 2007. The product specs say it is compatible but not recommended...are there any potential problems? What could go wrong with the software if I use it on XP Home? Why isn't it 'recommended'? Thank you.

that is a strange one.You should be ok.I cannot imagine why they

would say that

Windows XP true or false?

Windows XP Pro or home will only allow you to install it on ONE computer only. True or false?

You never really OWN XP, every year you have to pay to get it reactivated, or a upgrade, maintenence, or subcription fee(otherwise if you want to use it year after year, you have to keep paying for it) true or false?

If you decide to upgrade your graphic card, hard drive, memory XP goes stupid and won't work until you call Microsoft to get it reactivated(and maybe pay more money) True or false?

Truth, I do not believe XP the be al that and a bag of micro chips. I see it as a way to keep the consumer in their pocket by making sure all other older, totally free options are gone, and you have to keep paying them getting rooked like you do by the cable and oil companies. True or false.

When you install XP home or Pro you have to buy all new software because anything youhad that worked with Win 9X or 2000 won't work with XP. So, they get more money out of you. True or false?

Windows XP true or false?windows firewall

false, I have never made a single payment for Windows XP

Windows XP true or false?microsoft frontpage internet explorer

I've installed the same XP Pro SP2 CD on 5 different computers and registered all 5 of them, and never once had a problem. Microsoft should be familiar with the concept of a 4-5 person household so they don't really care. It's those serial keys that get plugged 10,000 times a day when they start to take action.

There are no monthly fees or dues of any kind. One down payment at the checkout counter and that's it. You possess your end user license agreement at that point forward. No tricks.

As long as your boot hard drive remains, XP will be there. There will be peripheral searches when installing hardware but that takes 20 seconds.
the licnese is for a single copy on one machine....not that there aren't ways around that

technically i paid for an oem license for win98 since it came installed on my first puter but that was about the last software purchase i've made. everything is available on p2p networks including keygens and activation workarounds
True. You can only install it one computer.

False. You don't have to pay to have to keep paying for it year after year to continue using it.

False. Upgrading your computer doesn't make XP go stupid. But you do have to make sure the hardware, software upgrade is compatible with XP.

True. In order to get people to upgrade their computer systems, Microsoft developed XP. Microsoft will no longer support older systems and hardware devices.

True. Some programs that worked in 9x or 2K will not work in XP. You will have to check to see if your programs will work with XP or not. This is due to the new file system XP uses.
I believe XP can be used on multiple computers.

However your concept of not owing XP is false. You do not have to reactivate it every year, nor do you have to pay a subscription fee or anything like that. The only thing you SHOULD do is keep it updated using the Windows Update feature. That doesn't cost anything. It comes with XP. Once you purchase a copy of XP, it is yours. You are not renting it or anything.
Only the first assertion is true of XP.

The second is partially true in as much as you do not actually own XP.

All is true of Vista but not XP.

With Vista It is one installation per computer.

You do have to pay a subscription fee for virus protection.

You can only activate it one time and if you make a hardware change you will have to buy another license.

It is engineered to become obsolete when Microsoft decides they want to make it obsolete. (aka. kill switch)

And it is not backward compatible with most software or drivers.

But that is Vista.

XP is actually a pretty good operating system.

It is prone Virus and Trojans and Spyware attacks but it is not all that bad.
1) All software (with the exception of free-ware or share-ware) is supposed to be, "one copy for each computer". However, there really is nothing that will "prevent" you from installing XP on more than one computer...especially in a home environment.

2) False. Whoever told you that is making sh*t up.

3) False. Good lord, where are you hearing this stuff? microsoftparanoia.com?

4) False. Again. What the hell are you talking about???? Buy it once. Install it once. You're done!

5) Okay. This is, at least, sort-of true. Most software that worked with previous versions of Windows (especially 9x versions) won't work with XP. Although, much of the Win 2000 software will....but not all of it.
You need a license key for each computer using XP. If it's a retail copy rather than one that came with the computer, you can transfer it to another computer as long as you no longer use it on the old one.

No, you don't have to pay each year to reactivate or upgrade. As long as you have the computer, its copy of XP belongs to it at no further cost.

You can upgrade your graphics card and memory with no problem. If you have an OEM version you may need to get it reactivated if you replace the motherboard, but there's no charge.

XP has a a compatibility mode option to allow older software to work if it doesn't work on XP out of the box. Some software won't, but most 98SE and 2000 software will.
Absolutely false. I don't know where you got your copy of windows, but I've never paid for anything from Microsoft. As a matter of fact, I've never experienced any of the things you listed.
A lot of questions. I will just say no. Now "VISTA" scan the computer hardware for about 5-7 things and make a log and this filed when you register. Then when you go to Microbutt it know it not on the correct computer, if you install on another, and here you go. I wonder how it work when a person does change a motherboard or HDD. Probably have to kiss the microbutt, but, should be able to re-activate.
If you buy a windows XP version you own a single license and with this license you can install and run it on a single computer, so your first statement is true.

Your second statement is false you do not have to keep repaying for a Windows activation.

You don not have to reactivate windows if you install a new graphics card, memory, hard drive, or such, but if you install a new motherboard you may have to reactivate it.

Old software does need updating if you upgrade to windows XP, so this means you will have to buy new software, or obtain new drivers for devices.

Windows xp/xp/vista........triple booting?

I currently have vista ultimate(c:), windows xp pro (f:), I want to install a faster version of xp pro(tiny xp) to my spare drive(d:) for gaming only.

Tiny xp will run on computers that only have 300mhz cpu and 40mb ram at a quick speed, so with my rig it should run like lightning.

Trouble is, vista wont boot anymore, will I have to install tiny xp and install vista again, to get the boot loader working properly?

I have googled this and can't get a definative answer, any one point me in the right direction?

Windows xp/xp/vista........triple booting?windows 98

Xp versions need to go on first and second. Vista last as Vista replaces the boot manager when installed. If you install XP after Vista the boot manager Vista installed is replaced and this does not know about Vista.

Windows xp/xp/vista........triple booting?microsoft support internet explorer

Make sure all of your hard drives are connected. When you are booting up, repetivley press F2 and you should have a list of operating systems avaible for booting. If this does not solve it, press F12 when it boots up. I'm not sure if its F2 or F12. One displays system info, and the other is OS bootup. good luck. Anymore difficulties and or problems email me at whimsical2484@snet.net and I will be glad to help!
I too have read several articles regarding multiple booting, the overall impression I am left with is that in your case the XP systems should be installed first, but as you have said opinion and technique vary. good luck!!

Can't get Windows Xp Home edition w/ SP2 OEM installed.?

My PC had a non-genuine Windows XP Pro with SP2.

I Purchased a genuine Windows XP Home w/SP2 (OEM) at Newegg but haven't been able to install it. After the first rebooting it'd freeze at the logo screen. I returned the cd to newegg, they tested it and told me it's fine. I tried to install the non-genuine XP Pro cd, it did just fine, but I noticed that If I installed SP2 right after Windows booted, it'd freeze. The only way to get SP2 to work was installing Windows, then installing all the security updates, and then the SP2. I read on the net that probably my Soyo mobo needed to be flashed to support SP2. So I did, tried again with the genuine XP home and still did the same. After several attempts, I ended reinstalling the non-genuine XP Pro I had before, plus the sec. updates and the SP2 and have no problems at all. It seems like my pc only takes SP2 only as a separate add-on and not included in the Windows installation CD. I really want to make my pc legal. What else should I try?

Can't get Windows Xp Home edition w/ SP2 OEM installed.?windows xp home

One major problem is trying to "downgrade" from the XP Pro already installed to the XP Home OEM. Downgrades just can't be done. You'd have to completely wipe the hard drive clean and then format / install the XP Home.

Here's a link to a Windows help site that may give you some additional guidance:

Windows XP Home upgrade?

I have Windows XP Pro on my pc now and it keeps screwing up.I don't have the XP Pro disk. I had bought a XP Home Edition upgrade a while ago. Can I use the Home upgrade to install over the XP Pro without messing my pc up totally? I have a Win 98SE disk too.

I know this probably didn't make any sense but I hope someone understands what I mean lol

Thanks in advance :)

Windows XP Home upgrade?microsoft maps

I don't think you'll have any luck trying to go from Pro to Home. I definitely DON'T recommend Win 98.

Have you tried System Restore? It's a function that lets you take XP back to a given point where it ran error-free, so you can either figure out what went wrong, or just leave well enough alone! It's definitely worth trying if you haven't already.

To access System Restore, go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore. Choose Restore My Computer To An Earlier Time, then choose the latest day from the calendar when you knew your computer was working properly. You won't lose any data or files, but any programs installed after the restore date will have to be reinstalled. Good luck!

P.S. Yes, I think you could install the XP Home upgrade over Win 98. But I'd only do that if System Restore doesn't help.

Windows XP Home upgrade?windows registry internet explorer

You can install Pro over Home as it's considered an upgrade, but not Home over Pro. Also not 98 over either XP Home or Pro.
You cant install Microsoft windows XP Home over Microsoft Windows XP Professional. You will need to backup your data and format your C:\ Drive you can also create another Directory on the C:\ Drive to install Windows XP Home just insert the XP Home CD at Bootup and let the CD Boot - follow the on screen instructions and you will know what your doing hopefully. If you have success.. When you get online you will need to get all your Windows Updates including XP Service Pack 2 if it is not already included in the CD.

You will then be safe from Internet threats. You can get more help if you type in the questions you want to ask at http://www.google.com or http://www.askjeeves.com

You can also upgrade from Windows 98 SE to XP Home Edition or Pro no problem.

Need windows xp product key, or way to get password?windows 95 internet explorer

Well there is only one way to get it from your pc. Thats right you can get it from your pc and here is how. You need to call the FBI and have them take your pc to a secret facility for training in extracting information. Once that is done you will need to leave the room. Dont pay any attention to the buzzing coming from the room. Go out and do some shopping for a couple of hours once you returned you shall have your license and a nice pc that will not give you any trouble.
You most likely have to reinstall your operating system. Before you buy one check out UBUNTU linux at ubuntu.org. It is free and you get all the programs you will ever need ***FREE***.

Do not purchase VISTA see the following article -

http://www.boingboing.net/2007/01/13/vis...
Unfortunately, obtaining a windows XP key (legally, anyway) can be tricky and/or costly. You can always get one from searching around on the internet, but this is illegal and your windows installation may fail unless you use other illegal tools to prevent it. I would recommend purchasing a copy of windows xp if you want to stay legal. You can buy a copy of windows for far less than the $120 Compusa was trying to charge you. Otherwise, google is your friend.
