Yes, you can do an upgrade install rather than a full install which will keep your files and applications and just upgrade the OS. Step by step guide here:

just keep all ur data file in a safe partition ...... but all ur programs will have to be installed again !!!!
yes. you can always upgrade windows. instead of re-installing it. granted, re-installing is always the best way i think, just to start clean and everything. the easiest way to save data is a portable USB hard drive. i have a WD160 gig that i backup my stuff on and its about the size of a deck of cards...if you cant do that you can fit the most on a DVDR...or you can just use CDRs...whatever floats your boat. but if you reinstall you will lose pretty much everything.
Your question is in two ways:

1) You want to upgrade your windows 2000 pro to windows xp pro; or

2) it sounds like you want to install windows xp in such a way that you can still have windows 2000 and can choose which operating system you want to boot to.

In both instances, YES. In 2) you do so by splitting partitions into two drives, e.g. a 120Gb hard drive can be partitioned into two 60Gb partitions and can install separate operating systems in each partition. This however depends on how the first windows 2000 was installed.
