I recieved a laptop for school from a friend. I have tryed the usual clean up (defrag, disk clean, add/remove programs) but think I have made a mess. I dont have a waranty nor the funds to repair. System Restore will not work. I've been instructed to buy Evidence Eliminator but am unsure because of the price which I would have to save for and the negative reviews Ive read. I just need help from someone who is proficent and ethical. I have invited someone by Remote help who seemed genuine in helping but was not so I am not sure what else to do. I need to use the laptop for school and cant afford driving to library or college to use theirs anymore. Please Help!

Re-install the OS. Its always safer with a second hand computer anyway - who knows what nasties lurk on Windows!

Reformat. That's all I can say. You didn't state anything about the actual problem, you just said what you tried to do to fix it. Just Reformat and start fresh.
Yes, I agree you need to REINSTALL the Windows XP operational system and hopefully your friend gave you all the DELL CDs. There are several steps involved liking re-registering the XP Windows software that could cause problems for you and the Windows XP updataes esp SP2 are time-consuming that seriously you might really consider asking around for competent PC shop or paying some Geek (not Best Buy) or maybe placing ad on local Craigslist and asking for warranty on repair should it fail again within ____ of days that they would continue to honor REPAIR %26amp; SVC WARRANTY bec you could be in for more heartache if you attempt to do something you don't know anything about and make it worst...
Best Of Luck!
