when I start my computer give me two options: windows xp home and windows xp pro. , how I can cancel this message and start my computer directly with windows xp pro.

u should delete ur "xp home" so u dont have to choose that.
Select "My Computer" right click to properties -%26gt;startup ... then u'll find a dialog having one combobox with you "pro" selected. look for a button labeled "edit" or advanced or something like that . choose that n u'll be dropped in an editor(same as notepad). Completely select the line corresponding to the os that u dont want to use and delete.... save and restart...

First, boot into XP Pro---Then,

I just started a windows xp repair procedure.

E.G. Boot from windows xp pro cd. press enter and let it find an installation of xp on the main harddrive then press R to repair.

After I thought it was complete.. i took out the cd then it came to the screen that comes up when you're installing windows then asked for the cd so I put it back in.

So it said 39 minutes for installation to complete. I waited and it gets to about 37 mins then stays there for a while and the text that tells u about what windows offers still changes then the progress bar starts to move again and the minutes go down.

Then the pc restarts like its completed the repair then goes on like its going to boot into windows like it normally does then comes to a screen that says windows setup is restarting. Then goe's back to the screen I mentioned above and keeps doing it.

What could the problem be? External harddrives and USB sticks that I've connected to the pc?

It sounds like your Windows image is pooched. You might have to start over with a clean install. However, I always disconnect external drives when doing systems work like this.

1. Linux is known to run on machines with 400mb hard disk space and 4mb memory. So as far as 'gigs' are concerned linux is really lightweight.

3. Not a very clear question , if you install linux on machine A, it can in no way affect machineB, linux is great but it does not have any magical powers. As far as access control, linux is much more secure for multiple users with their individual home directories. Only the 'root' can make system wide changes.

I wouldnt change it could cause errors and not help ur machine run right and folders files will be mixed up all over place and u will lose memory and hard drives wont work well

I I have been installing Windows XP home edition on my new computer that i just built...when i get to about 35 minutes left the screen goes blue and says irql less or not equal.. i believe my problem is that i have been installing windows with a disc that is only made for my gateway computer and is Service Pack 1. Then i found my windows xp pro disc that can be used for any computer. However, whenever i put the pro disc in, it just tries to resume the home edition installation and prompts me for the home disc. Is there anyway i can revert this and try to go back to starting over and try to install pro? whenever i put my home disc in before it will resume installation it will say press any key to boot from CD and i can start it all over .

Do i need to do anything in the BIOS to make the CD autorun because it is burned and if i do then how do i get to the BIOS nothing showsme how to get to the BIOS please help thanks

Sounds like your burned CD isn't bootable. This is evident that it resumes the Home install (which runs from the HDD whenever you see the "minutes remaining" type interface). Best bet, try to get a bootable install CD.

1. check your cd rom if it's okay. then, proceed to 2.

2. check your cd if the copy is bootable. the cd itself will tell you if it's bootable or not (a burned copy is not recommended, unless you know how to make a bootable copy out of your burned cd.)

3. upon startup, go to setup (del or f7, or whatever may be shown on your screen) .

4. check your boot sequence. make sure your first boot device is CD-ROM

5. insert cd.

6. restart pc

7. do nothing. let your pc read the cd.
Personally, I would reformat the drive with ntfs and get a fresh new copy of windows sp2 or the pro and register it

If your machine boots from the Win XP Home installation disc, but not the Professional install disc, I would suggest the latter is not a bootable disc. Have you tried it in another machine?
couldnt answer you last night cos yahoo stopped me.

you cant put on win xp cos win home edition is newer so it will stop you ..so you have to get to your bios try f2 f6 f8 or delete it should tell you when ur pc boots up you know if you prob cleaned ur cd xp home you can just pick up where it stopped it happened to me but as i was saying when you get into ur bios set 1st boot to cd rom 2nd to h/drive. put in xp pro and it will format ur h/drive and will install

HELP!!!!! trouble reinstalling windows xp?

Here goes: I had several virus and maleware problems so i went out and bought a reinstallation dvd for windows xp media center (yes i have a dell media center pc). So i started the reinstallation process then about half way through i realize that although the dvd says media center, it seems to be installing windows xp pro. So now, i cant get back to media center or finish the installation process of pro because "the signature for windows XP Pro upgrade is invalid. The error code is 426." Meaning my code doesnt match up because its for media center not pro. It just keeps restarting trying to finish the setup but it cant. Did i do something wrong or was the dvd misprinted? HELP! :(

Hi, You say you have a dell media center pc. Ive never had a Dell but you should have a recovery disk. Insert this and it should allow you to install a fresh Windows copy thats exact to the one that came with your PC.

You can buy XP Home and XP Pro in boxes, but XP Media Center Edition (MCE) comes from the factory on certain laptops/dekstops that meet standards for picture playing and the like.

MCE is the newest of the bunch and has some nice features that are integrated together, but its not really excellent at any of them.

Pro is sometimes needed for higher level programs because some computer programs need it to run, but its not really worth it unless you know what you're doing with computers.

Home is the more basic version sold to your average consumer.

well xp home doesnt have a lots of features that windows xp has like business tools and stuff,but xp professional has all the features xp home has but has a few additional things for office work,and windows xp media center edition is just windows xp professional but it has a extra program installed called microsoft pluss digital media edition and microsoft plus,and these programs allow you to apply more skins to your windows,and windows media player and allow you to download more skins,plus it has dancing character that dance on your screen and has software for converting audio formats and also allows printing cd labels,and has lots of screen savers..the choice is yours but i would recommend you get a copy of windows xp media center.

Yes it does. When you get into XP 64bit then you can add even more ram. The problem with xp-64bit is its stil not friendly with all drivers and programs. Its risky switching to 64bit windows, it does support most programs and drivers but there is a chance it might not accept a game or program so its up to you. Yep i agree with Ben, plus XP will only go to 4GB max, anything over that is totally wasted and can even cause crashing and unexpected behaviour.

I'm pretty sure Vista allows higher RAM capacity? Not sure, but considering how much RAM it actually uses, i would think the limit would get bumped from 4GB to 6GB or something along those lines. As i said, not sure - you're better off doing some research, Your hardward sounds like it would easily cope with that much RAM so i wouldnt worry about that.
Nope. Generally this limit is around 3 GB total, because one of the bits is reserved for use when addressing memory. Applications are limited to 2 GB total, but thanks to some clever technology, each application "thinks" it has infinite memory (in reality, each has its own 2GB ceiling, but that's a lot for one application, so it might as well be infinite). You may hear about this switch you can do to increase this limit, but it will change the way your PC performs and can degrade performance. I don't recommend doing it. 3 GB is a lot. Going 64 bit allows you to use several terabytes, but usually to get similar performance on a 64 bit machine you have to double the amount of memory, so if you were using 3 GB on 32 bit machines, a 64 bit machine would need 6 GB to guarantee similar performance when memory pressure increases.
