Laptop hdd (E drive data storage) was connectd via IDE/USB cable to pc. I unplugged the hdd from the IDE end of the cable while the cable still in usb port on pc. I wanted to connect another hdd as the first one is now full (I have only one cable) The cable itself works with the second slave hdd, but when I reconnectd the full one, no show in My Computer. Have I damaged it by disconnecting from the cable without first pulling the usb plug out of the pc? %26amp; if so, what is the best way for me to recover the data on the disc?

Try turning off the computer then connecting the drive then turn the computer back on.
