Think twice before moving back to Win 98. I think there is no support for Win 98 nowadays. Also, most of the software that are coming out are for XP.

2. choose CD ROM support from the menu (3 options).

3. type the command fdisk and hit enter

4. follow the instructions to format.

5. now go to CD Drive from the command prompt (go to win 96 folder)

6. type setup and hit enter.

If you reveret back to Win98 you will not be able to download and install all the security patches from Microsoft. They stopped supporting Win98 in 2004/2005...Next to be stopped is Windows Me/ then Win2k.......They are trying to push everyone to use Windows XP home/professional or Vista......Thanks
re-partitioning and formatting using dos commands can be difficult if you have not tried it before. So if you have win XP cd, boot from it, then when you come to a screen where you are asked to choose the partition on which to install xp, you will see a list of available partitions in the lower panel on the same window. You can press appropriate keys, as mentioned on the screen to first

1) delete all partitions

2) create new partition/s of the desired size

Then exit after partitioning, by turning power off, then take out the cd while rebooting.

After that insert the win98 cd and start the installtion. It will choose the partition to install windows and then start formatting automatically.

However if you do not want to repartition and only format then boot in dos mode using the win98 cd and use the command

format c:\ press Enter

to format another partition, format d:\ etc, to format your existing partitions.

I've never had a problem with XP pro. Put the cd in the cd player and reboot. To make sure that it's booting from the proper mount point, press delete, or whatever key brings up your bios. Check your bios settings for boot sequece to make sure that the CD is the first boot option, then the hardrive is the second, then the floppy, or USB is the third option. Then press F10 and continue with the boot process. When it asks for fail safe mode, hit that. If you get into the operating system, then power back out and reboot and choose windows.

Sound to me like your whole life is wrapped up into windows (Microsoft). Try installing Debian (open source Linux) along with your window and use the YaST configure utility to lengthen the time it takes to choose between operating systems from 7 seconds to 999 seconds, then have fun with both. If your Windows gives you a problem again, you'll have Linux to save your system with.

Media Center is based on XP Pro, but many of the more advanced features are missing. Call it a stronger Home Edition with more crap you don't need (for a laptop, at least). The biggest adavantage for home users is that Media Center supports 2 processors/dual core, which Home Edition does not. Pro by itself supports 2 processors. Laptops as of now, don't.

Remove the password from the account that was created. On My XP Pro I never created any account and it goes straight to the Desktop.

Make sure an other account other then Administrator exists. If one doesn't, create another new account and then restart the computer, should fix it. Also, an option to auto login should exist in there but not to sure (I'm on a Mac)

No. First of all, Yahoo's information is stored remotely on Yahoo's servers. Secondly, if it were on your computer, you still wouldn't lose anything if you did a basic upgrade. Using a regular WinXP disk or a Upgrade disk, you can upgrade from previous versions of Windows without losing data. Just pop in the disk and follow the instructions.

What is Pro? There is a Windows XP Home Edition and a Windows XP Professional edition. Are you trying to figure out the differences between the two or are you trying to compare Windows XP with another operating system?
Pro has more UI (user interface) custimization features and more in depth options for networking and such. Home and Pro are very similar and for anyone who doesn't know the difference you most likely do not need Pro anyway. Media edition is a 3rd version of XP that incorporates remote controls and such and improved movie watching etc. Probably best to download all 3 and try them out =p JUST KIDDING don't download programs.......

Hi all you computer people. I was wondering if any of you out there have advice on the following probleme. My Hp lap top did not start for some reason and I lost my recovery disk. I git windows XP PRO and formatied the HD and installed a fresh copy of Windows Pro. There are a few probelemes.

My XO Pro is a new fresh copy and I tried reinstalling it. the copy is only about 560MB so, I think that might be the Probleme.

You must re-install all your drivers. They were deleted with everything else when you reformated.
You will need to go to Microsoft and download the sound drivers and you need to install the Internet provider program as well as any other programs which you had on the computer. Good luck.

I just called my DSL Tech support today, Tuesday at Noon, and they helped me clearly set the connection settings up.

Setting up a new connection you need to select: "Never dial a connection." and make sure in the Advanced part that none of boxes are checked. Your DSL service provider should be able to make sure I remember all the correct steps.

You will need to reinstall your sound card drivers or update the drivers through the guided steps from inside the Device Manager.
Well your first problem sound: It seems you have to download the driver for the sound on your system. Most hp laptops have soundmax integrated audio in them so you can try downloading the driver from www.soundmax.com.

The second problem i.e networking: The copy of win dat you have is an old version hence it doesn't have wireless networking available on it. If you are using a genuine Ms Win xp copy then you can rectify this by downloadin the sp2 final. And if you are using a pirated copy then ask your vendor to provide you with a sp2 integrated win xp cd.

This should solve the problem.
Godd chance that neither the wireless or wired ethernet drivers got installed. You need to go to the HP website and find the drivers for the hardware you have. This will apply to sound as well.
If you're not getting sound, it's probably because you deleted the driver program that XP Pro needs in order to get the speakers working... and chances are, if you can't connect to the Internet, the problem is simmilar. If your modem doesn't have the programs it needs to connect to the Internet, then the modem won't work at all. I know you can download the programs you need from the Internet, then put them in the computer you need them in, so it will run properly, but unfortunately, I don't have knowledge as to where you can find those programs.

I run Windows XP, too, but I have the Home Edition... nothing all that special... but my computer is a Dell model. I don't know if there are any differences in programming between Dell and HP, so I can't help you any more than this; but see if you can find out if the hypothetical problems I listed above are correct... if not, then I don't know.

chkdsk is perfectly fine but not reinstalling windows
No, using an xp home or pro cd will screw up windows even more than why you need to do a repair in the first place. the kernel files are different as well as the majority of the system files.

a repair install deletes all the necessary system files, and then replaces them with fresh, uncorrupted ones from the installation cd.

running checkdisk merely checks the file system on your hard disk. now dont get me wrong, i've used it and it works for file table or master boot record errors, but for a major amount of corrupted system files, even though it is worth a shot to run checkdisk, you have a 50% chance of it working.

It will work. It is not an upgrade. As was stated, that is a down-grade of sorts. The home edition is limited by comparison to the pro addition. If you don't need the pro, home edition is fine. If you already have the pro, then don't waste money on another edition.

Its simply because the BIOS does not contain a software that could read your USB. BIOS only recognizes CD Rom Drive, Floppy drive, Keyboard, Monitor, etc, but not the USB port. The USB Driver comes from the Installation Disk of the Windows XP Pro CD, or in your case, is still in your Flash Disk. You will not be able to run your Windows XP installation thru your Flash disk unless you are installing or upgrading your XP from within windows itself. It would be wiser to use the Windows XP PRO CD for this installation.

I recently got a macbook pro, and installed boot camp and Windows XP to it. It starts up fine, and I installed all the mac drivers as it tells you to do. But there is no sound. The computer says there is no sound device under the device manager. I found the actual sound drivers in the program files, and clicked set-up. It goes through something and then says to restart the computer. When I did that it went back to the program and said the system would not recognize those drivers. I did some google searches and couldn't find anything about the sound not working (just that if you hook up headphones to it while in XP, the mac's speakers will still play audio). So, anyone have any clue how I can get the sound to work on the Windows XP side of my Macbook Pro?

TIP: Just make sure that when anyone uses your PC, they must do so ONLY as a Guest. So, log off as Admin FIRST.

What you need is the MCE video decoder. Google it. There are several sources, including Nvidia. The link below is for the encoder test. You seem to be confusing media center and media player in your post-XP can have media center and media player 11, not media center 11. If any of your recorded TV is copy protected, it can only be viewed on the PC it was recorded on.
